UC-Mexico Bi-National Symposium  “The Students We Share” to Explore
Challenges Facing Students Who Attend School in Both U.S. and Mexico

A diverse group of educators, researchers and policymakers from the United States and Mexico will take part in “The Students We Share/Los Estudiantes Que Compartimos,” a bi-national symposium September 12 & 13 in Mexico City exploring new research findings on the experiences of students who attend school on both sides of the border.

The symposium will examine recent research of the experiences of students who attend school in both countries at different times during their educational experience and the challenges educators and administrators face in integrating bi-nationally educated students into their schools. Symposium participants will seek solutions for the urgent needs of the hundreds of thousands of students caught between school systems in Mexico and the United States that struggle to communicate with each other and are hampered by bureaucratic requirements that leave students stranded.  The effort will develop public policy options for optimizing the educational and workforce development of Mexican-origin students in the United States and Mexico.

The symposium is a project of the University of California-Mexico Initiative and highlights a partnership between El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF), UCLA, UC Riverside, and UC San Diego. In addition to the organizers, seven Mexican institutions of higher education in Mexico are serving as co-convenors including CIDE, CIESAS, COLMEX, Instituto Mora, PIPE, UABC, and UdeG. The Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) of the Secretary of Foreign Relations (SRE), and the U.S. Embassy are also participating. The symposium will be held at the Casa de la Universidad de California in Mexico City.

A draft agenda for the symposium outlining speakers and research presentations can be found at programa 082416.pdf.  The symposium will be streamed live.
